Childhood Traumatic Grief and COVID-19- Health -10:15-11:15 am

September 22, 2021

Presenter:  Judith Cohen, MD

Description: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused more than 600,000 deaths to date, including more than 40,000 children losing one or both parents, often under traumatic circumstances. Deaths from overdoses have also significantly increased during the pandemic, with many children also experiencing traumatic deaths of loved ones from other causes such as suicide, accidents or homicides.   This can lead children to develop significant trauma reactions that interfere with the child’s grieving and  other difficulties(“childhood traumatic grief”).  This presentation describes how clinicians can recognize children with traumatic grief, and use an evidence-based treatment, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to help them recover.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe 3 circumstances of a loved one’s death specific to the COVID-19 pandemic that may increase youth risk of developing Childhood Traumatic Grief (CTG)
  2. Describe the 9 TF-CBT PRACTICE components for children and caregivers
  3. Describe the TF-CBT  grief-focused components  for children and caregivers
