Supporting LGBTQ Youth During COVID-19: The Critical Role of Families-Enduring Material:

 

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth face unique challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. This session is designed to highlight these risks and discuss methods of reducing them and protecting these youth.

All healthcare providers

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss health disparities and support needs for LGBTQ children and youth, with increased stressors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic
  2. Identify specific family rejecting behaviors that are related to increased risk for suicide, depression, illegal drug use and HIV, and family accepting behaviors that help protect LGBTQ youth from risk and promote well-being
  3. Discuss the Family Acceptance Project’s family support framework, with strategies and resources to help ethnically and religiously diverse families and caregivers to support their LGBTQ children to prevent health risks and to increase support
  4. Describe 2 Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) applications for LGBTQ youth that are associated with decreased post-traumatic stress symptoms
  5. Identify 2-3 local or national resources available for LGBTQ youth in times of crisis.
