Motivational Interviewing Learning Journey Level 2 Workshop 3 Self Study Video: Identify Member’s Priority Needs and Assess Readiness -Enduring Material

The WBT course is the first part of the learning journey and will introduce learners to an overview of Motivational Interviewing or MI. Each learner is at different levels of exposure and competency when it comes to Motivational Interviewing.  To account for this, learners are asked (as part of the WBT) to complete a brief 10 question assessment to help in assigning the appropriate journey for their learning needs. Placement is dependent on two factors: Learners current role and placement score. The journeys are tailored to help familiarize them with how MI relates to them and their role.

Learners who have completed the Motivational Interviewing Learning Journeys Overview Web-Based Training Course and assessment are assigned to their appropriate Learning Journey Level. The Learner should follow this Learning Journey over a span of six months, attending monthly 2-hour virtual instructor-led training sessions and completing the activities associated.  Content each month will build upon the last workshop, and by the end, the goal is for the learner to have a comprehensive understanding of Motivational Interviewing and how they can use it in their day-to-day role, which ultimately results in a more positive interaction with our members.

Learning Objectives

  1. Summarize with the member their priority needs and assess member’s readiness by applying the 5 Steps to Facilitate Change method.
  2. List member’s priority needs by applying the FIG model (Follow, Inform, Guide) and identify key concerns and/or barriers.
  3. Apply analogies to create a better understanding.
  4. Identify Faulty Line of Reasoning (FLR) simultaneously with developing the relationship to identify member’s priority needs.
  5. Identify the two components of member readiness- Importance plus Confidence. Demonstrate and utilize leverage of the Readiness Ruler and The Envelope Technique to determine readiness.
