Immigrant and Refugee: Maternal Mental Health and Social Support Needs

Pittsburgh, PA US
September 16, 2024

The 7th Annual Immigrant and Refugee Health Conference will focus on the subject of immigrant and refugee maternal mental health in the antenatal and postnatal periods. Migrant and refugee pregnant women constitute a highly vulnerable group to mental disorders, due to their unique needs during this period. Intervention programs and services for refugee populations seldom provide adequate support for the mental health needs and challenges of refugee mothers. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that as many as one in three migrant women from low- and middle-income countries has symptoms of perinatal depression.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the maternal mental health challenges faced by immigrants/refugees.
  2. Explain how social supports can be used to reduce maternal mental health disorders.
  3. Identify resources for providers to address maternal mental health in the immigrant community.
  4. Review currently available community programs and analyze their helpfulness for immigrant and refugee populations.
  5. Apply knowledge to improve existing or create new mental health supports/programs, as needed.
