The Fundamentals of Oncology course 2026 is divided into four days of education.

Sessions are offered every Thursday in February.  

Each session may be taken independently.

Attendees can register for one, two, three or all four sessions in advance.

The courses are free to AHN health care professionals.

$50 per course registration fee for those outside of AHN.

8 – 9:30 a.m. Hematopoiesis/myelosuppression
Oncology nursing practice (scientific basis, site-specific); treatment
9:30 – 9:45 a.m. Break
9:45 – 10:30 a.m. Benign heme and coagulation
Oncology nursing practice (scientific basis, site-specific); treatment
10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Cellular transplant
Oncology nursing practice (scientific basis, site-specific); treatment
11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Clinical trials
Oncology nursing practice (scientific basis, site-specific); treatment
12:15 – 1 p.m. Lunch
1 – 3 p.m. Hematologic malignancies
Oncology nursing practice (scientific basis, site-specific); treatment
3 p.m. Wrap-up and evaluations

Target Audience

This course will provide clinicians with basic oncology information and skills to care for any
oncology patient population.

Learning Objectives

Explore the genetic basis of inherited cancer syndromes.

Describe the genetic counseling process.

Explain tumor nomenclature, molecular biology concepts, diagnosis, and treatment principles.

Distinguish the phases and components of clinical research trials.

Recognize diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)
and how it relates in oncology.

Discuss management of various vascular access devices available for use in patients with cancer.

Summarize care of medical, surgical, hematological, and radiation oncology patients including the common side effects, complications, and management related to treatment modalities.

Examine basic pathophysiology, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment interventions of solid tumor, hematologic malignancies, and benign heme disorders.

Review rationale for the use of various blood products and components.

Identify the basic process of autologous, allogeneic, haplo, and cord blood transplantation.

Recall radiation terminology and safety principles.

Explain the different radiation treatment modalities: external beam therapy, brachytherapy.

Give examples of radiation disciplines
coordinating patient care and treatment.

State principles of radiation treatment
planning and process.

Differentiate the various oncologic emergencies and complications that may arise in the immunocompromised oncology patient.

Summarize nutritional issues impacting
patients with cancer.

Examine survivorship issues associated with cancer diagnosis and various treatment modalities.

Assess fertility and sexuality issues related to
cancer diagnosis and treatment modalities.

Differentiate between hospice and palliative care programs.

Distinguish the treatment modalities for acute, chronic, and oncologic pain.

Integrate coping strategies for clinicians
when caring for patients with cancer.

Recommend oncology rehab strategies contributing to survivorship outcomes and quality of life.

Recognize various psychosocial issues
pertinent to patients with cancer throughout
the continuum of care.

Relate knowledge from course to clinical practic

Please note that participants who park in the hospital’s main garage at Liberty and South Millvale avenues will be required to pay the regular rate for six to 12 hours.
