This training session is designed for grief professionals to deepen their understanding of manifestations of trauma while providing grief support, particularly within the context of serious medical conditions, end-of-life experiences, and bereavement. Grief is a normal and natural response to loss, yet it can be compounded by historical, generational, or medical trauma at various stages—from diagnosis and medical treatment to end-of-life and post-death. Through case studies, this session will provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to identify trauma experienced by individuals on the grief continuum.
1. Understanding Grief and Trauma in Medical Contexts
- Participants will be able to define the grief continuum and recognize symptoms that present as trauma, particularly in the context of serious medical conditions, the end-of-life experience and bereavement.
2. Recognizing Trauma in Grieving Populations
- Participants will understand how trauma may present or be experienced in the continuum of the grief process, including caretaking, medical treatment, and following death.
3. Improving Professional Practice
- Participants will evaluate current practices for supporting bereaved individuals and identify areas where trauma may be overlooked or inadequately addressed.
